Isla del Coco used to be called Coney Island in a little nod to its New York counterpart and was a park we had to visit 3 times before luck would smile on us.
Our first attempt came on day 2 having taken a taxi to Jalisco Park we then needed to take another from the pick up point opposite the city cemetery, which we figured more tourists would visit. Rather than go for a big American car we thought it would be amusing to try getting in this, which we managed and which our driver was happy to attempt too.
A 30 minute drive later we were at the outer gates of the park and saying good bye to our driver we made our way into the park. It looked quiet and as we walked past the security guard he didn't seem to bothered about us being here.
As we got to the ticket booths it appeared that the park was empty but open. So we chose to walk around and take some photos.
It looked like there was some renovating going on here with a couple of the rides stripped down.
Cute mascots.
This was the coaster, a Chinese made flitzer type ride.
The ride seemed to be in an operating state which was a good sign. Just not today.
The ride was open enough that we could board the station and take some photos from there.
At this point a second security guard and a manager approached us and asked us to leave explaining that the park was closed today but would be open tomorrow. We apologised and promptly left, as we did so the two people were chastising the first security guard for letting us in.
The next day we hired a driver and made Coco our first stop. A small crowd had gathered outside the park which was a good sign but they weren't going in which was a bad one. There was a woman at the ticket booth who said something about an ambulancia although we couldn't understand the rest of what was being said. We agreed to head off to our next location (see next page) and then come back later in the day.
and when we did the people were still gathered outside. We waited for a little while and then heard a cheer as an ambulance pulled up into the carpark and the ticket seller started letting us in. So I guess its a condition of opening that there needs to be a medical team on site. I don't know if that's a good thing or not :)
With the park open we were able to walk around and take a few more photos unhindered this time.
and we got to ride the coaster which was actually really good (not something you say about Chinese rides) and probably the best coaster in the country.
and that was Coco Park. Third time lucky and a coaster I think we're all glad we got.
But there were others to go and check out and it was time to head to another.
