Guanajuato

I knew nothing about Guanajuato but Tal and Thomas both mentioned we should stop by on the way.

As someone who loves underground things I was a amazed when we had to drive through a series of tunnels to reach the city. It turns out the city used to do a lot of mining but to open themselves out to the rest of the country (its quite difficult to reach) they converted the mine tunnels into roads. The taxis were cutely called "Taxi de Minero" (Miner Taxi)

We parked our car in a very cramped car park. Clearly space is a premium here.

A rather cool looking church. We were planning on taking a funicular railway up to the top of one of the hills surrounding the city

You can buy a single or return ticket and the view on the way up is good but save your camera for the best photos that you can take at the top.

and the view was amazing. So much city cramped into so much space. I hadn't realised this was a UNESCO site but I totally understand why.

This is El Pipila who was a local here from this city. He's at the top Funicular station overlooking the city.

A perfect opportunity for a pano.

and you get good photos with a zoom too!

Another celebration of the dead.

The city theatre which looked stunning.

"I'm a story teller and my story must be told"
(I have no idea how that got into my head)

I wasn't too far off. He just needed to lose the hat.

In the centre of the city we found this beautiful tree covered square, perfectly maintained so we stopped off here for a quick bite to eat.

The city Basilica which was built in the late 1600s.

This looked older but was actually built in the mid 1700s. This is now a gallery.

We thought there would be something amazing at the top of the stairs and after a tiring climb, which wasn't as bad as Zhangjiajie's we found 3 tired Europeans and a locked door.

We did get a nice view back towards the hill we'd ascended just a few hours earlier.

Overall the city was really nice and had so much character and I totally understand how it got UNESCO status. A great addition to the trip from Tal and Thomas.

and on the way out we passed these amazing pieces on the exterior of an old bullring. Bonus!

Time for another detour next.
