Having done the parks and with our flight back to Joburg not leaving til well into the night we decided to spend our evening at the harbour.
This wheel will always be in my mind because a coaster stood on the ground it now stands on and I remember checking and rechecking on google maps that I was in the right place the last time I came here.
There was some TV show audition thing being filmed here. I think the prize was to become a presenter on a music show.
Arty shot of the wheel.
The harbour is home to a vast array of boats, from old things like this to naval battleships. Some of them take passengers out for a little boat trip. I thought stealing the battleship would be a good idea, only I don't know how to pilot one.
This used to be a holding cell for prisoners destined for Robbin Island, a prison complex on an island near to Cape Town. It's similar to Alcatraz at San Francisco but instead of having Sean Connery or Clint Eastwood as famous inmates, this one was home to Bob Geldof's best buddy Nelson Mandela.
The building is now home to a small museum documenting what it was like to be a prisoner destined for the island. It looked quite bleak but the toilets were quite nice and modern, so it wasn't all bad.
Like San Francisco the harbour is also home to some seals. These ones are more active though.
There's Table Mountain way off in the distance. We started our day up there looking here, so it was apt to end the day looking in the other direction.
Some nice installations on the seafront. I'm not sure how much these these cost but they weren't selling.
One of those novelty signs that shows how far away all the nicer places in the world are. Are these ever checked? Well I thought I'd do that and there's a tolerance of error but the numbers are close enough :D
There are some nice buildings down on the sea front. Weird to have a round balcony above a square one. The inconsistency irked my OCD.
Bon Jovi flashback
Dinner came in the form of this rather tasty local fish.
A view from our table overlooking the harbour.
Having said goodbye to Cape Town we took a taxi back to the airport. I quite liked this message when we got there. As a firm believer of a "Don't be a dick" social thought-set (I don't know why politicians don't have that as their slogan), this resonated.
A random toilet poster recruiting for menial work. English isn't required to work at McDonalds it would seem.
For those who take shuttle buses from Joburg airport. A little tip, they tend to gather around the back of the Intercontinental Hotel which is right in front of the departure entrance. Just head there, hang about and the bus will soon rock up.
and that was our day in Cape Town over. Tomorrow, another day trip, this time North.
