We think Jalisco Park is the oldest park in the country opening in the 50s and is well known to Cubans as the title of an 80s song written by local lad and revolutionary Carlos Varela
In researching this park we were only able to find one review which painted it in a very bleak light so I am glad this report will be able to counter that with a slightly more positive one.
Your best chance of finding the park open is to go late in the afternoon on weekends.
All the rides were running, including Montana Rusa, the rollercoaster.
Historically they used to own a large wild mouse, which is the coaster that Carlos sings about in his song. Now that has gone and in its place is a small very old kiddy ride that he wouldn't be allowed to ride; that wouldn't make for as good a song.
Fitting into this wouldn't have been easy but the engineer working on the ride took the chance to try away from us explaining that whilst he would have liked to have us ride he couldn't because he was struggling to keep the ride running as it was. Getting parts would be quite difficult, and seeing peoples' check in items being left behind at the airport I can believe that.
So, no tick today but we didn't mind. We felt quite special just being here as not many people have.
Elsewhere the rides were all running and in use, so the park is actually doing OK contrary to the report I'd read before I came here.
and that was Jalisco Park. I could write a song about it but it'd be depressing :)
I have just gone to see Jalisco Park and was weird experience...thinking a lot about Carlos Varela song
